Sciatica is the pain that radiates with the path of sciatica nerve, which roots from your lower back to your hips and buttocks and goes down each leg. But usually, sciatica occurs only one side of your body.

Sciatica is a sensation that can manifest as moderate to serve pain in your lower back, buttocks, and legs. You may also feel weakness or numbness in this area. Sciatica is more likely to occur to people between 30 to 50 years of age.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

Symptoms of sciatica is very different it is usually sciatica if you are experiencing pain flowing from your lower back to your lower limb through your buttock area. Other symptoms may include the following symptoms:
1.    You may have pain that worsens while moving your lower back or leg.
2.    You also may feel numbness and weakness in your leg, which is usually felt in your sciatic nerve tract. In severe cases, your feet may stop feeling or moving even.

3.    You can also feel a sensation of a pin and a needle, including a painful tingling in your toes and feet.
4.    You may also experience inferiority control over routine action. In many severe cases, you may also experience loss of urine and stool control, may also face difficulty in the passing urine.

What are causes of sciatica?

Sciatica can be caused by any condition of your spine, and may affect your back veins. Common conditions that can cause sciatica pain to explain below.

1.    Herniated disc – Disc is made of the cartilage which is a strong and resilient material, the cartilage act as a cushion between each nerve and allows the spine to be flexible. A herniated disc occurs when a disc is pushed out of place and putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.

2.    Lumbar spinal stenosis – spinal stenosis is also called stenosis of the spinal cord. This is characterized by an abnormal narrowing of your spinal cord. This contraction puts pressure on your spinal cord and the roots of the sciatic nerve.

3.    Spondylolisthesis – when one spinal cord advances from another, the expanded spinal cord puts pressure on your sciatic nerve. Spondylolisthesis is also slipping or dislocation or displacement of one vertebral bone over other causing compression of the spinal nerve.

4.    Muscle spasm- when the muscle of your back, buttocks and foot becomes hard, tight and painful, also it gives you muscle cramps than it puts pressure on your sciatic nerve.

Treatment of sciatica

If your pain is not cured by self-care, the doctor can tell you one of the following treatments.

Medicine for sciatica pain

Anti inflammatory medicine, muscle dysfunction medicine, narcotics medicine, anti-seizure medicine, etc.

Physical therapy

Once your pain improves, your doctor can create a program to help you prevent future injuries. This includes exercises to improve your sitting, standing or walking postures, strengthening your back muscle and improving flexibility.

Steroid injection

When your pain does not improve with the medicine and physical therapy, then your doctor might recommend you corticosteroid injection into the area of involved root nerve. A corticosteroid helps to reduce pain by reducing inflammation around affected nerve.

This option is usually used when there is too much weakness due to compressed nerve, loss of bowel or bladder control or when your pain gradually increases and there is no benefit from any other treatments. Your surgeon will remove the bone spur or the portion of the herniated disc, which puts pressure on the pinched nerve. This sciatica surgery can be done in a minimally invasive way through a keyhole endoscopically using a laser. So the patient may not suffer from severe pain.
