What is Cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is a medical condition that affects the spinal disks in the neck. It mostly happens because of the wear and tear of bones as well as cartilage. Cervical spondylosis can be seen in people of all age groups and it gets serious with age. If there will be any shrink or dehydration in the disks then it can develop osteoarthritis. There are many other factors also that make this health issue to happen. According to studies, people who are above 60 years are mostly affected by cervical spondylosis.

Possible causes of the cervical spondylosis

Some of the common causes of cervical spondylosis are mentioned below:
·         Any sort of injury: During an injury or fall, you can get impacted on your neck. This can cause cervical spondylosis.

·         Bonespurs: These spurs are the overgrowth of bone which occurs when the body tries to grow the extra bone for making the spine stronger. Disk degeneration can also make the spine to produce extra bones. Sometimes, these bone spurs can pinch the nerve roots or the spinal cords and result in pain.

·         Dehydrated spinal discs: In the spinal bones, there are discs in between them consisting of gel-like cushions. These cushions make the neck to withstand the shock of different activities. If this gel-like material gets dry out then this can cause spinal vertebrae.

·         Ligament stiffness: Over time, the spinal cords become stiff. This affects the movement of the neck and even causes pain.

·         Overuse: If there will be the overuse of the spine for everyday activities then it can also affect the neck area. There are some occupations and jobs that require extra pressure on the spine which causes wear and tear of the cartilage.

Symptoms of cervical spondylosis

One of the most common symptoms of cervical spondylosis is the weakening of muscles. This might cause you trouble while lifting any object or moving the shoulder. Cervical spondylosis affected people will also have pain around the shoulder and arms. This pain might increase over time while sitting, coughing or making a body movement. It is better to see a doctor if you are having these symptoms.

Treatment of cervical spondylosis
If you will see a spine specialist then he/she might advise you below mentioned treatments:
·         Medications: The doctor will recommend your medicines as per your pain and medical history. Steroid injections can also be given to the patient to reduce pain and tissue inflammation. Muscle relaxants are also prescribed if the patient is having neck spasms.

·         Physical therapy: With this, you can get help in stretching the shoulder muscles and neck. This will also help in relieving shoulder pain.

·         Surgery: If the pain doesn’t go off with medicines then surgery is the only option. The seriousness of the spinal issue can only be treated with surgery. Cervical fusion is another type of surgery that will reduce pressure on the spinal cord.
